Sumarroca cava house in Penedés wine region (near Barcelona) has organized the second edition of its fashion show together with 108 Joyas, a jewel company based in Barcelona. We also intruduce an unusual vineyard acitivity of Sumarroca: a breakfast with birds of prey.
The vineyard at Finca Molí Coloma with red carpet indeed turned into a catwalk, where participants could experience how fashion and art can fit into nature – especially if it is inspired by nature. The designer of 108 Joyas (‘Jewels’), Xesca Lopez commented on her new collection, which is based on the animals of the vineyard: “everything was born from a dream in which I created a collection inspired by the forms of nature and the world of wine “. At the end of the fashion show, the estate invited the guests for a unique “wine pairing”. The protagonists – Martina, Temps de Flors and Terral, three wines of the estate – were paired not only with a matching tapa, but also with a jewel.
Breakfast with birds of prey
This love of nature appearing in the jewels is not by accident: Sumarroca is an organic winery. “We have always cultivated our vines in full respect of the environment and principles of sustainability, with minimal use of pesticides. In fact, we were among the first to use pheromones in our vineyards as a natural form of woodworm pest control.
In 2014, we took the decision to obtain organic certification. And it was in 2018 that our products could finally be officially labelled as organic and endorsed by the CCPAE (certification body of Catalonia).” Since then, in 2023 Sumarroca has renewed its Sustainable Biosphere Certificate as well.
The winery does much more than avoiding the use of chemicals in the vineyard: this year Sumarroca has won Premio Vinari (‘Vinari Award’) in Wine Tourism to the best sustainable and environmental activity for Vuelo de Rapaces (‘Flight of Birds of Prey’). Visitors choosing this activity can see birds of prey and then having a nice, authentic farmers’ breakfast with cava. During the two-hour activity guests are taken by cars to Mirador, a spectacular spot in the vineyard, where they can meet the three feathery friends of the winery: Pinot, Samsó and Syrah. The braver visitors can pet them or even hold them in special protecting guests. Then comes the breakfast with local sausages, cheeses, bread with tomato and cava for the adults, juice for the kids.
Price: 25 euros (adults) 15 euros (7-15 years old), 8 euros (3-6 years old), gratis for kids under 3.
