Though Xarel·lo is a well know variety in the land of cava, its variation, Xarel·lo Vermell is less known and only a few estates bottle it is a varietal wine. Cava Bertha family estate (near Sant Sadurní d’Anoia) makes a varietal wine of Xarel·lo Vermell called Autora, what’s more, Autora is a complex project all year long to promote donations to Clínic Barcelona Hospital Universitari.
Plus: Cava Bertha has just launched a new activity called “Wine Speaking Club” – relaxed way to practice English with glass in hand in the fabulous lounge and garden of Cava Bertha. If you are a wine tourist and don’t speak Spanish or Catalan, at these club sessions you can enjoy Bertha cavas and wines, and meanwhile you can chat in English with the locals.
New vintage release of Autora
The 2023 vintage of Autora has just been released. Organic wine, the grape was harvested by hand in small boxes. Since the berry has a reddish colour (vermell means red), with longer maceration on the skin the wine obtained a nice, pinkish colour. Some batonnage was also applied to achieve more intense flavours. A refreshing, juicy, fruity wine abundant in white flesh fruits and citrusy notes. According to the team, the wine is very versatile, it can be paired with any fresh dishes and it is also enjoyable in itself.
100% of donation
I was curious about how the donation works, how much percentage of the price of the goes to the foundation. Carolina Pascual of Cava Bertha explained, it works in a different way. First of all, they promote the foundation in their newsletters very effectively, until now they have raised 4200 euros this year. Then, they organize events all year long, where the guests are served the wine Autora and snacks for free, in return they donate to the hospital. In this way, Cava Bertha donates the 100% of the income of the sales of Autora.

Wine Speaking Club
Cava Berta team is really creative, they come up with something new from time to time. Yoga with view of the vineyards, reading club, winery visit with virtual reality glasses – to mention just a few. A novelty is the Wine Speaking Club, a session when participants chat in English and enjoy the gorgeous view and the chilled sparkling wines. The price is only 5 euros, it goes directly to the English teacher Anna Corral, and guests pay for their consumption.
The first session takes place on 26 May at 12.00.
Cava Bertha winery visits
– Visits are available on Saturdays and Sundays at 11 am.
– The visit is in Spanish or Catalan, but English is also possible, contact the team.
– Price: 15 euros, it includes the visit and 2 glasses of cava.
– The wine bar with terrace is open on Saturdays and Sundays as well from 12.00 to 15.00, reserving a table is highly recommended.
– You can go by car, it takes about 45 minutes from Barcelona (and in Spain drivers are allowed to drink a few glasses). You can also take a train, R4 to Sant Sadurní d’Anoia, and then take a nice hike about 40 minutes, or take a taxi.
